Uttam Kumar Interview – 1st Job And 10 Mistakes Book

Uttam Kumar completed his Masters in Mathematics. He currently runs NGO “Straight From Heart.” He also runs Voter awareness Program “Vote Please”. Let us know more about his writing.

What inspired you to start writing?

I was born in Punjab and my childhood was spent under shadow of terrorism. At that time I had a lot of anger in me for terrorists and their supporters. I was introvert so never discussed my anger with others. So I started writing my views. But at that time the situation was different. I never thought of getting these published.

What did you like to read when you were a boy?

I read Mathematics only in my childhood and nothing else. As I grew, I read Mahatama Gandhi’s “An Autobiography: My experiments with Truth” and it became philosophy of my Life. Now whenever I am in doubt, I read this book.

What is the greatest challenge in writing a book?

Every Individual had different challenge. For me, greatest challenge is time. It becomes really difficult to spare time for writing.

How much research do you do before writing the book?

Whatever I do in my life, I do thorough research. For my book, “1st Job and 10 Mistakes” , I researched around 500 people over 10 years.

What motivated you to write the book “1st Job And 10 Mistakes”?

Motivation was a real life incident. One of my known person’s friend was about to commit suicide. Also I saw many people repeating similar mistakes in their First Job and ruining their career. So, I thought of sharing my observation with people. It may help someone.

Can you tell us more about your latest book “1st Job And 10 Mistakes”?

The book highlights the common mistakes a Beginner must avoid in one’s career. It is useful for anyone on a new job or in first 5 years of job. Written in a simple and easy to understand language, the reader connects easily to the topics. Examples are quoted from real life. Solutions are easy and doable. It is a must read for the one who has already made wrong financial decisions and has created a financial mess for self. It also highlights the side effects of opening economy and easy access to credit.

How did you come up with the idea of writing self help genre book?

One reason was what I explained above. Also My nature has been to Swim against the tide. There are very few people writing on Self Help, so I thought of writing in this genre. The most difficult task during writing this book was to keep it Short and Simple.

Who are your favourite authors?

Mahatama Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Munshi PremChand and Shiv Kumar Batalabi.

How much time do you dedicate to writing on a daily basis?

I try to spend atleast an hour daily.

What words of wisdom would you like to give to aspiring writers?

Follow your heart. Rest is Bakwaas! There is no set rule for writing. No one can teach you writing. If you really wanna write, just listen to your heart and Do what it says.
