Clyde D`Souza Interview

What inspired you to start writing?

Reading. I read a lot of books during long summer holidays or boring afternoons. I even read the back of shampoo bottles. When I ran out of stories and shampoo bottles I started writing my own stores.

What did you like to read when you were a boy?

Famous Five. Archie’s. Tinkle. Chandamama. Damn Chandamama was fun. Do you get it anywhere these days?

What is the greatest challenge in writing a book?

Being honest. Especially when you’re writing a fiction story you can take short cuts with the plot to create drama. But they may not be true to life. Kicking yourself in the ass to write everyday is also a challenge because you don’t have a boss sitting on your head.

How much research do you do before writing the book?

How much is how much :)? Depends on the subject. For Kissing Ass which is based on office politics I drew on my personal experience and our collective honest feelings when it comes to dealing with people at work. For Ghanta College I really had to remember my college days and I spoke to a few college students.

What motivated you to write the book “Ghanta College: The Art of Topping College Life”?

An honest fun and useful book on how to get through these very important experience that we all will go through. No one gives us a handbook on how to deal with our first college year, making friends, bunking etc. Now there is one 🙂

Can you tell us more about your book “Kissing Ass”?

There is politics in every human endeavour and more so when our salaries are dependent on it. Again Kissing Ass simply is about human psychology and how we act in certain situations. Success at work is not about doing your job but dealing with people.

The book takes one through the entire journey from joining a new company, the art of writing emails, office sex or how to make the most of your leaves:)

Who are your favourite authors?

I love Roald Dahl. From his ghost stories to childrens fiction. He creates a mad world. Dave Barry is also really funny. I also like This Is A Book by stand up comedian Demetri Martin. A nerd humour book What If? by XKCD.com creator Randall Munroe.

How much time do you dedicate for writing on a daily basis?

Zero. But that needs to go up to 1 hour a day. Currently i have stopped writing and do one funny doodle per week on my blog.

What words of wisdom would you like to give to aspiring writers?

Don’t be a writer. Be a scientist.

Writing at its worst is stupid time pass for a reader. At its best it may inspire someone to do something with their life 🙂
